Rap is often associated with, and is a primary component of hip hop. It is a musical form of vocal delivery that joins rhyme, rhythmic speech and street vernacular that is performed in time to an instrumental track or beat. However, it can also be performed a cappella without accompaniment. Three things are said to make up a rap music: the words, flow ( i.e rhythm and rhymes) and the tone.
In Nigeria, various musicians abound that has chosen the line of rap to carve a niche for themselves. While there are those that makes their music full rap, others chip it in as a part of a music. However, here is a list of the top five best rappers in Nigeria.
1. Olamide:
Formally known as Olamide Adedeji is credited as the best rapper in Nigeria. He was born on the 15th of March 1989. He entered the music scene in 2011 and since then had made waves for himself. Most of his songs are in his native tongue, Yoruba. To show how good he is in what he does, he is popularly referred to by his fans as ‘ badoo’.
2. M.I :
Jude M.I Abaga as he is formally known was born on the 4th of October 1981. He is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and the CEO of Chocolate City. He entered the music industry in 2004. He won Best Hip Hop and Best New Act at the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards. He is also nicknamed Chairman following his release of the album titled Chairman in 2015.
3. Ice Prince:
Born on the 30th of October 1986, Panshak Zamani as he is formally known is a rapper, singer, songwriter and the vice president of the Chocolate City. He entered the music scene in 2004. He gained popularity following the release of Oleku.
4. Reminisce:
Remilekun Abdulkalid Safaru was born on the 26th of January. Joined the music industry in 2008 and quickly rose to prominence as a result of his exceptional talent. He is a Nigerian singer, rapper and songwriter. He performs in both English and Yoruba, his native language. He is signed to EDGE Records and is the founder of LRR Records.
5. Phyno:
Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike was born on the 9th of October 1986. He is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer and actor. He entered the music industry in 2003 as a producer. Phyno started his singing career as a rapper in 2010. He does most of his rap in Igbo language. He is signed to Penthouse Music
